The Pearl Islands were made famous by Vasco Nuñez de Balboa in 1513. Soon after crossing the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean he encountered a group of Indians wearing many pearls and pearl encrusted boats.
He wrote to the King of Spain telling him of the incredible riches and the islands were claimed by Spain.
Long before the Spanish claimed the Pearl Islands, pre-Columbian kings living on islands off of the coast of modern day Panama would command divers to search the ocean floor for oysters bearing the tiny white spheres that would come to be known as pearls.
To the South and West of Panama City are the Pearl Islands. This is where Spanish treasure galleons stopped to count the gold on their way from Peru.
During the Spanish Colonial times, the archipelago was inhabited by pirates and buccaneers who would hide in the back bays and hidden coves to attack the Spanish Armadas laden with treasure.
the Pearl Islands remained in their state of natural beauty until the first hotel was built in the 1960’s.
